Please plan your travel and make your Nambour accommodation reservations early because the Sunshine Coast’s finest multi-arts festival is returning!

Horizon Festival is a 10-day event that takes place around the Sunshine Coast. It honours place, and the programming reflects that. But, more importantly, the Traditional Custodians of the Country, the Kabi Kabi People and the Jinibara Peoples are honoured.

The events vary, but they are always in breathtaking settings. There will be music, art, theatre, dancing, workshops, a ceremony, and plenty of activities for the entire family. Here’s what you can enjoy at the 2023 Horizon Festival.

Opening Ceremony

August 25, Cotton Tree Park

Relax, contemplate, and celebrate the start of ten days and nights of great programming from throughout the region — and Australia — with special performances by Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe, Jinibara Dance Troupe, and others.

Following the Opening Ceremony and NOISE by Dancenorth Australia, be the first to see Briefs Dirty Laundry’s Opening Night performance and enjoy local brews, excellent food, and music in the Festival Hub garden.

Glambour

August 26, The Old Ambo / 80 Howard Street, Nambour

The Old Ambo’s Glambour is the launch celebration for two exhibitions: Unapologetically Dressed and Nonsensual. Expect a night filled with glitz, drag, music, costumes, and a lip-sync contest. Remember to dress up!

Andrea Kirwin, Sierra Noble, Ketakii Jewson-Brown, Shaye Hardisty, Fat Dog, Jordyn Burnett, Fiona Harding, and others will host the event, so you know it’ll be a blast.

Njumga Djum Yo: Ran Ba Djuwan

August 26 – September 3, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Translated as ‘through the smoke, they come home,’ this poignant visual art exhibition curated by notable Jinibara artists explores the delicate link between people and place, and each of the included artists is inspired by, and called to create, by the country itself.

Circus Wonderland: a Neverland Adventure

August 31 – September 3, Wonderland Spiegeltent, Cotton Tree Park

Are you ready to return to Neverland with JM Barrie’s classic tale of Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell, Pirates, Mermaids, and a ticking crocodile? Think your happy thoughts, get ready to take the second star to the right, and head straight on till morning to ‘A Neverland Adventure’.

Immerse yourself in the fascinating worlds of Neverland and Mermaid Cove and be fascinated and intrigued. With dazzling flying acrobatics, incredible feats, and amusing antics to keep you intrigued and amazed!

Dear Reader: a Celebration of Readers, Writers and Libraries

September 2, Library Venues / Beerwah Heart Precinct

Read, listen, learn, and connect with your community through your shared love of reading. The Sunshine Coast Council Libraries are bringing together writers, readers, and creatives for one big day at the Beerwah Heart Precinct to share the love of storytelling.

Meet and mingle with successful local authors, participate in fascinating storytelling sessions, hear captivating First Nations stories, locate your next great novel, and enjoy various entertaining activities for all ages.
