Rain over your Sunshine Coast Motor Lodge stay is no reason to lose the day. The best rainy day activities on the Sunshine Coast sit within about 20 minutes of our Woombye front door: a craft distillery, the Ginger Factory, a Mooloolaba aquarium, a 12-screen cinema and our local pub. Verified hours and door-to-door directions are below.

Where can you go tasting close to Woombye when it rains?

The closest wet-weather option is Sunshine and Sons Distillery, a two-minute drive south down Nambour Connection Road toward the Big Pineapple at number 104. The distillery door is fully indoor and open daily from 10am until sunset, with on-site parking right at the entrance. This is the local craft distillery behind the Original Dry Gin, a vodka and the certified-organic Nil Desperandum rum, all made on site in the rainforest gardens beside the Big Pineapple. A guided tasting runs around 45 minutes to an hour, and if the rain has really set in you can stretch the visit with a cocktail masterclass or a founder’s tour, both bookable ahead. It suits adults aged 18 and over, expect to pay a set fee per tasting flight, and it is an easy, unhurried way to spend a grey morning barely two minutes from your room.

Is the Ginger Factory a good wet-weather option?

Yes, the Ginger Factory at Yandina is one of the best rainy-day picks in the region, and general entry is free. From our front door it is about 15 minutes north through Nambour and onto the Bruce Highway to 50 Pioneer Road. The factory is open every day from 9am to 5pm, and the tour, café, shopping and much of the site are undercover. Guests keep mentioning the little train ride, the Overboard boat ride and the ginger ice cream, all of which land well with kids. Budget two to three hours if you want to do the paid rides and the bee talk, or just wander the free areas, taste the ginger products and warm up over coffee while the shower passes.

What indoor attraction suits the whole family?

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast at The Wharf Mooloolaba is a fully indoor aquarium and an easy 20-minute drive east on the Bruce Highway and Sunshine Motorway. It opens at 9am, and the 80-metre underwater ocean tunnel, the resident seals, the rays, the sharks and the jellyfish keep younger children absorbed regardless of the forecast. Parking at The Wharf is sheltered and the precinct has plenty of covered walkways if you want lunch afterwards. Book online outside school holidays and you can save up to 20 per cent on entry. Allow around two hours, it works for all ages, and it is one of the few attractions where the weather outside genuinely does not matter.

Can you catch a film and shop under cover?

If the rain has properly set in, Sunshine Plaza at Maroochydore keeps you dry for as long as you like, about 20 minutes east of Woombye. The BCC Cinemas complex here has 12 screens and opens from around 10am, so a matinee is an easy call on a wet afternoon. The centre has multi-level undercover parking with four hours free, and free parking after 6pm if you stay for an evening session. When the film finishes there are more than 300 stores and riverwalk dining under the same roof, so it is a low-cost, all-ages way to wait out a downpour without ever stepping into the weather.

What’s the easiest option without leaving Woombye?

Sometimes you just want a short hop, and The Woombye Pub is a nine-minute walk or a three-minute drive from us at 3-7 Blackall Street in the village. It is open from 10am to 10pm every day, with an indoor dining room, a wood-fired pizza oven and an indoor-outdoor kids playground, so families can settle in comfortably. The menu runs to pub classics like chicken parmigiana, burgers and local seafood alongside the pizzas, there is a gaming room and a drive-through bottle shop, and a free courtesy bus runs on Friday and Saturday nights and Sundays. Order a wood-fired pizza and a parmi, let the kids loose on the playground, and let the shower roll through the hinterland.

Rainy day FAQs

Is there anything to do near Woombye when it rains?

Plenty. Within about 20 minutes of Sunshine Coast Motor Lodge you can taste gin at Sunshine and Sons, tour the Ginger Factory, walk the aquarium tunnel at SEA LIFE Mooloolaba, catch a film at the Sunshine Plaza cinema, or settle in for wood-fired pizza at the Woombye Pub. All are indoor or undercover.

Do these rainy day spots have undercover parking?

Most do. Sunshine Plaza has multi-level undercover parking with four hours free, the Ginger Factory and The Wharf at Mooloolaba have sheltered car parks, and the Woombye Pub has its own on-site parking. Back at the Motor Lodge, your car sits under cover right by your room.

Can we still use the pool if it is raining?

Yes. Our saltwater pool sits in the tropical gardens and stays open through light rain, and the covered BBQ gazebo is right beside it if you want to stay dry. A warm hinterland shower often clears within the hour, so many guests just wait it out poolside.

How far is the nearest indoor option to the Motor Lodge?

The Woombye Pub is the closest, about a nine-minute walk or three-minute drive along Nambour Connection Road into the village. It opens at 10am daily, has an indoor dining room, a kids playground and wood-fired pizza, so it is an easy first stop when the weather turns.

A wet day on the Sunshine Coast hinterland is easy to fill when you are based in Woombye, with all of these spots a short drive from your room and undercover parking waiting for you back at the lodge. When you are ready to plan the trip, book your stay with us and browse the attractions near the Motor Lodge for more ideas, rain or shine.
