May is when the Sunshine Coast hinterland is at its best, and from Sunshine Coast Motor Lodge in Woombye you are in the middle of it. This guide covers the four things that change as autumn settles in: the weather, what opens up once the humidity drops, the season’s signature activity, and what to book ahead. Everything you need to plan a May stay is here.
What’s the weather like on the Sunshine Coast in May?
May sits right on the turn from autumn into the dry, cool season, and the change is noticeable. Daytime temperatures ease to around 22 to 24 degrees, the humidity of summer lifts, and the nights turn cool and clear, often dropping into the low teens up in the range. It is worth packing a jumper for the evenings even when the days feel like shorts weather, because the elevation around Maleny and Montville sits well above the coast and cools quickly after sunset. The ocean is still a comfortable 23 degrees on average, ranging from roughly 21 to 25, so a midday swim at the coast is on the table. This is settled, dry-weather territory, which is exactly why walkers, cyclists and market-goers rate the hinterland so highly at this time of year. It is also the point in the year when the tropical gardens around the lodge look their best, with the heat off and the pool still warm enough for an afternoon swim after a day out.
What opens up once the humidity drops?
The cooler, drier air is what makes May the pick of the walking calendar. The rainforest tracks are comfortable rather than sticky, and the waterfalls are still running well after the wetter summer months. Mapleton Falls and the walks around the Blackall Range are at their seasonal best from April through October, and the elevated boardwalk at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve near Maleny is an easy, family-friendly rainforest walk in any autumn weather. One thing to keep in mind: some tracks in the range can close after heavy rain, so it is worth checking the Queensland Parks alerts for Kondalilla and the falls circuits before you drive up, so you are not caught out by a repair closure.
What’s the signature May activity from Woombye?
If May has one defining activity, it is a slow day in the Blackall Range villages, and Woombye is the natural base for it. A twenty-five to thirty-minute drive brings you to Montville and Maleny, where the cool-weather cafés, cheese and produce, art galleries and coastline lookouts come into their own once the summer haze clears. Guests keep mentioning how the cooler evenings make the hinterland feel like a proper getaway, with a jumper on and a fire going in the village pubs. For something more structured, the fourteen acres at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World look out over the Glass House Mountains and stay open year-round from 9am, which makes them a reliable cool-season half-day. Pair a morning rainforest walk with an afternoon wandering the villages, and if you have the dog with you in one of our two pet rooms, the range has plenty of open, leashed-walking country to enjoy along the way.
What should you book ahead for May and early June?
May is the run-up to one of the busiest fortnights in the hinterland calendar, so a little forward planning pays off. The Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show runs 12 to 14 June 2026 at the Nambour Showgrounds, just six minutes from the lodge, and the Noosa Food and Wine Festival lands 11 to 14 June 2026, drawing crowds region-wide. Both fill accommodation across Woombye and Nambour, so if your stay touches early June, book three to four weeks ahead, and earlier still if you need one of our two pet rooms. Closer to home, the Big Pineapple markets run every Saturday morning next door, a fixed point you can plan a weekend around whatever the month. Held every Saturday from 6:30am, the markets are around 80 per cent undercover, so a light autumn shower will not wash them out.
May in the hinterland FAQs
Is May a good time to visit the Sunshine Coast hinterland?
May is one of the best months. The summer humidity has eased, days sit around 22 to 24 degrees, nights are cool and clear, and the waterfalls are still flowing after the wetter months. It is prime walking and village-hopping weather, and based in Woombye you are central to all of it.
Can you still swim on the Sunshine Coast in May?
Yes, on the warmer days. The ocean averages about 23 degrees in May, ranging from roughly 21 to 25, so a midday dip is comfortable for many. Back at the lodge, our saltwater pool sits in the tropical gardens and is still very swimmable on the sunnier autumn afternoons.
Do I need to book accommodation ahead for June events?
Yes. Early June is busy in the hinterland, with the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show and the Noosa Food and Wine Festival both landing in the same fortnight. Rooms in Woombye fill for those weekends, so booking three to four weeks ahead is wise, especially if you need one of our two pet rooms.
Are the hinterland walks open in autumn?
Most are, and autumn is the ideal time to do them. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and Mapleton Falls walks are at their best in the cooler months. Some tracks in the range can close after heavy rain, so check the Queensland Parks alerts for Kondalilla and others before you set out.
May rewards a slower, cooler kind of Sunshine Coast stay, and Woombye puts the walks, the villages and the coast all within easy reach of your room. When you are ready to plan an autumn escape, book your stay with us and browse the attractions near the Motor Lodge to map out your days in the hinterland.
