Every year Christmas seems to get busier. Battling through the crowds at the shopping centres requires new levels of patience as we prepare for the big day. But once Christmas is done and dusted, it’s the time for some rest and relaxation.

Boxing day is ‘take it easy’ day, and our advice is to hit the beaches and get some much needed sun, sand and surf, and recharge those batteries, ready for 2015. This year, the Sunshine Coast is the place to be, with its golden beaches and miles of boardwalk to enjoy.

Beach Baby

The Sunshine Coast has around 126 locations for keen surfers from Double Island Point to First Point, Old Woman Island, Coolum and Mooloolaba Beach. Board riders come from all over Australia to ride the waves. There are also a plethora of safe swimming beaches and there is nothing like some time in the ocean to refresh the soul.

There are also beaches like Kings Beach and Dicky Beach that feature rock pools and small sea ponds where little ones can explore the mysteries underwater for hours on end. And for those who love coffee and good food there are picturesque beaches like Bulcock and Mooloolaba, where you can sit back and watch the waves from a string of beachside cafes.

Night Markets

For those who haven’t had enough shopping during the silly season, Bulcock Twilight Markets are on Boxing Day evening. These markets feature beautiful handmade and artisan crafts as well as jewellery, street food and live entertainment. The markets are open from 4pm to 9pm and can be followed with a lovely walk along the Bulcock Beach boardwalk and a glass of wine or meal along the Esplanade.

Where to Stay

Accommodation on the Sunshine Coast is typically expensive at this time of year, but there are options for those on a budget. The Sunshine Coast Motor Lodge, which is conveniently located at Woombye and close to most beaches, is really affordable. The rooms are comfortable and there is a relaxing garden and pool where you can chill out away from the hustle and bustle.
